BAS Project Engineer

Role Summary

The Building Automation Project Engineer is responsible for the technical execution, on-site coordination, and successful delivery of building automation system (BAS) projects. Acting as the field counterpart to the Project Manager, this role ensures that systems are implemented in accordance with design intent, project schedules, quality standards, and customer expectations.

This role bridges engineering, operations, and commissioning-owning day-to-day site execution, technical decision-making, and coordination of internal and external stakeholders during project delivery.


Key Responsibilities

Project Execution & Field Leadership

  • Lead the on-site execution of building automation projects from kickoff through commissioning and handover
  • Serve as the primary technical authority on-site, resolving installation, programming, and integration issues
  • Coordinate daily activities of technicians, subcontractors, and vendors to meet project milestones
  • Monitor progress against schedule and escalate risks or delays to the Project Manager

Technical Implementation

  • Review project documentation including drawings, specifications, sequences of operation, and submittals
  • Execute or oversee BAS controller programming, graphics development, network configuration, and system integration
  • Support system integration with HVAC equipment, electrical systems, metering, and third-party systems
  • Perform and support system testing, functional verification, and commissioning activities

Quality, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure installations comply with engineering standards, codes, cybersecurity requirements, and company best practices
  • Enforce site safety requirements and proper work practices
  • Conduct quality checks and punch walks to ensure systems meet scope and performance requirements

Stakeholder Coordination

  • Act as the technical liaison between engineers, technicians, sales, subcontractors, and customers
  • Participate in project meetings, site walks, and coordination meetings with clients and trade partners
  • Provide clear technical documentation, redlines, and as-built updates

Project Closeout & Handover

  • Support customer training, documentation delivery, and system handover
  • Ensure all commissioning, testing, and closeout documentation is completed accurately
  • Assist Project Manager in achieving successful project closeout and customer acceptance

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Building Automation, Controls, or equivalent technical experience
  • 5+ years of experience delivering building automation or controls systems in a project environment
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, BAS architectures, and controls strategies
  • Experience working with common BAS platforms (e.g., BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, IP-based systems)
  • Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and sequences of operation
  • Comfortable working in active construction and operational facilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a field project engineering or lead technician role
  • Commissioning or functional testing experience
  • Familiarity with data centers, critical facilities, or complex commercial buildings
  • OSHA or site safety training certifications
  • Strong documentation and technical reporting skills
