Controls Technician - Building Automation Systems (Niagara / Distech)
Location: Austin, TX (On-site with local travel to customer and project sites)

Position Overview
The Controls Technician is responsible for installing, programming, troubleshooting, and commissioning Building Automation Systems (BAS) using Tridium Niagara (N4) and Distech Controls platforms. This role supports new construction and retrofit projects across commercial buildings and works closely with project managers, engineers, and field teams to ensure systems are delivered on time, on budget, and in accordance with design intent.
Key Responsibilities
Installation & Field Execution
- Install BAS control panels, controllers, sensors, actuators, and network devices.
- Perform point-to-point checkout, including I/O verification, device addressing, and wiring validation.
- Verify installation aligns with drawings, submittals, and project specifications.
- Coordinate with electricians and mechanical contractors to resolve field issues.
Programming & Configuration
- Program and configure Niagara (N4) stations, controllers, and supervisory devices.
- Implement Distech control applications, sequences, and device profiles.
- Configure BACnet devices, networks, and IP addressing.
- Develop and modify system graphics, alarm management, schedules, and trends.
Startup, Testing & Commissioning
- Perform controller and system startups.
- Support functional performance testing and commissioning activities.
- Troubleshoot HVAC equipment control issues, network communication problems, and system-level failures.
- Support punch list resolution and seasonal commissioning activities.
Integration & System Support
- Integrate third-party systems via BACnet, Modbus, or IP protocols.
- Support energy optimization strategies and system tuning.
- Assist with customer training and system handoff at project completion.
Documentation & Quality
- Complete startup reports, test documentation, and commissioning checklists.
- Mark up as-built drawings and track field changes.
- Ensure systems meet company standards, safety requirements, and customer expectations.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED; technical degree or formal controls training preferred.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in Building Automation or HVAC controls.
- Experience working with Tridium Niagara (N4).
- Practical knowledge of HVAC systems (AHUs, RTUs, VAVs, boilers, chillers).
- Ability to read control drawings, wiring diagrams, and sequences of operation.
- Strong field troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Distech Controls product lines and applications.
- Niagara N4 certification (or progress toward certification).
- Experience with BACnet MS/TP, BACnet/IP, and Modbus integrations.
- Experience supporting commissioning agents and project closeout activities.
- Familiarity with energy analytics or smart building initiatives.
