Consulting Engineer - Architectural Systems & Design
A mid-level engineering consultant is needed to lead small and mid-sized projects focused on both new construction and the assessment and repair of existing buildings. This role involves managing complex individual projects or juggling multiple assignments that require oversight of junior staff and direct client interaction. The consultant will be expected to maintain active involvement in professional organizations and technical committees relevant to their area of expertise. The position requires physical mobility including climbing ladders and scaffolding, working at heights, and traveling by car, train, or plane to various job sites.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support senior engineers with design work, site inspections, and documentation of existing structures.
- Investigate and resolve issues related to building envelope failures.
- Provide design guidance to architects and construction support to contractors.
- Perform sampling and analysis of envelope components such as cladding, windows, roofing, waterproofing, and below-grade systems.
- Conduct field testing for water intrusion and performance of building systems including roofs, curtain walls, and windows.
- Develop repair designs for aging or damaged building systems.
- Mentor junior staff and provide on-the-job training.
- Review architectural and engineering plans for quality and accuracy.
- Offer expert support in legal cases involving building system failures.
- Assist with construction administration and ensure design intent is followed during execution.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Architectural Engineering (Master's preferred).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in architecture, engineering, or construction management.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or Registered Architect (RA).
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.
- Proven ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
- Proficiency in graphic and design software.
- Bonus experience in curtain wall design, historic preservation, rope access, or public speaking.
- Willingness to travel to remote sites, including those not served by public transit. A clean driving record may be required.
