Job Description: Director of Operations - Charlotte, NC

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Director of Operations to lead and expand our mechanical construction operations in the Charlotte, NC region. This senior leadership role oversees project execution, fabrication, field operations, resource planning, safety, and operational strategy. The ideal candidate is a decisive, people‑focused leader with deep expertise in mechanical systems, industrial/commercial construction, and cross‑departmental coordination.


Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

  • Provide strategic direction and oversight for all operational functions, including project management, field operations, engineering coordination, and fabrication workflows.
  • Drive operational excellence through improved processes, standardization, and performance metrics.
  • Serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, contributing to long‑range planning and business growth.

Project & Field Oversight

  • Ensure all mechanical construction projects meet quality, safety, schedule, and budget expectations.
  • Monitor project performance, address escalated issues, and support project teams with resources and strategic guidance.
  • Oversee manpower planning, field staffing, and craft labor productivity.

Financial & Business Performance

  • Develop annual operating plans, departmental budgets, and performance targets.
  • Analyze project financials, margins, and operational KPIs; implement corrective actions when necessary.
  • Support business development and preconstruction teams with operational insights during pursuits and estimates.

Team Development & Leadership

  • Lead and mentor project managers, superintendents, coordinators, and operational staff.
  • Build a strong leadership pipeline by promoting talent development, training, and succession planning.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and safety.

Safety & Compliance

  • Champion a proactive safety culture across all job sites and operational teams.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA standards, company safety protocols, and local/state regulations.
  • Support safety audits, investigations, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Client & Stakeholder Relations

  • Maintain strong relationships with clients, partners, suppliers, and industry stakeholders.
  • Support high‑visibility project meetings, contract negotiations, and conflict resolution.
  • Promote operational practices that enhance customer satisfaction and long‑term partnerships.

Qualifications

Required

  • 10+ years of experience in mechanical construction, industrial piping/HVAC, or a closely related field.
  • 5+ years of senior‑level leadership experience overseeing operations, project management, or large‑scale field teams.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, fabrication processes, installation practices, and construction operations.
  • Proven experience managing budgets, financial reports, and operational KPIs.
  • Exceptional communication, organizational, and leadership skills.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
  • Experience leading multi‑state or multi‑office operations.
  • Familiarity with BIM workflows, construction management software, and lean operational approaches.
