Electrical Engineer - Substation
Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Lead and manage large substation engineering projects, ensuring they stay on track with budget, timeline, quality standards, and coordination across disciplines.
- Plan and execute complex or unique projects, applying advanced expertise in substation design.
- Develop key design deliverables, including layouts, one-line/three-line diagrams, schematics, and specifications.
- Coordinate structural and physical design elements such as steel, foundations, grounding, bus systems, and conduit layouts.
- Select and specify major substation equipment like transformers, breakers, switchgear, relays, and instrument transformers.
- Perform system studies (e.g., load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, arc flash) to inform design decisions.
- Support construction efforts by addressing RFIs and reviewing/approving materials, equipment, and field work.
- Serve as the responsible engineer by reviewing, signing, and sealing engineering documents as required.
- Oversee and mentor engineers and designers, ensuring quality and consistency across project work.
- Act as a key technical contact, working independently while coordinating with internal teams and external stakeholders.
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure all designs meet applicable standards (IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, NESC) and internal quality procedures.
- Incorporate safety best practices for high-voltage systems into both design and construction phases.
Collaboration
- Work closely with project teams, contractors, utilities, and regulatory bodies to deliver accurate and buildable designs.
- Review vendor submittals, perform QA/QC checks, and coordinate across multiple disciplines.
Innovation
- Integrate SCADA, communication systems, and protection schemes into substation designs.
- Stay up to date on new technologies and sustainable engineering practices.
