Position Title: Building Automation Project Manager
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Position Overview
The client is seeking an experienced Building Automation Project Manager to lead and deliver BAS/DDC projects across commercial and institutional environments. This role is responsible for managing projects from initial turnover through execution, commissioning, and closeout-ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in HVAC controls and building automation systems, with the ability to coordinate across engineering, field teams, subcontractors, and customers. This role requires both technical expertise and strong project leadership skills.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning & Execution
- Organize and manage BAS projects from kickoff through completion
- Review project documentation, define scope, establish timelines, and allocate resources
- Coordinate with engineering, programming, and operations teams to ensure effective project execution
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously across new construction, retrofit, and upgrade work
Subcontractor & Vendor Management
- Review subcontractor bids and participate in selection process
- Prepare and maintain subcontract agreements and documentation
- Direct subcontractors by communicating scope, schedules, and installation expectations
- Ensure subcontractor work meets project specifications and quality standards
Procurement & Material Coordination
- Process material requisitions and coordinate with suppliers and panel builders
- Track material deliveries and align schedules with project milestones
- Coordinate with customers and field teams regarding storage and site logistics
Project Financial Management
- Manage project budgets, cost tracking, and forecasting
- Coordinate with internal teams and clients to support accurate project billing
- Review labor and cost reports and implement corrective actions as needed
- Support change order management including scope definition, pricing, and execution
Communication & Coordination
- Act as the primary point of contact for internal teams and clients
- Maintain regular communication with engineering, programming, field technicians, and leadership
- Conduct site visits, attend project meetings, and provide progress updates
- Ensure alignment across all stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle
Project Closeout
- Coordinate system startup and commissioning activities
- Ensure proper documentation including as-builts and closeout packages
- Facilitate owner training and turnover to service/support teams
- Ensure successful project completion and client satisfaction
Quality & Compliance Responsibilities
- Ensure all work complies with safety standards and applicable codes (NEC, NFPA, ASHRAE, etc.)
- Enforce proper installation, commissioning, and documentation practices
- Verify project deliverables meet quality expectations
- Identify and communicate corrective actions when needed
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience managing BAS/DDC or HVAC controls projects
- Strong knowledge of HVAC mechanical systems and building automation systems
- Experience in both new construction and retrofit environments
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and control sequences
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Project)
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree or higher in Engineering or related field (preferred, not required)
- Hands-on experience with DDC systems, installation, and commissioning
- Experience with BACnet-based or open protocol BAS platforms
- Background working with systems integrators or controls contractors
Skills and Abilities
- Strong project management and problem-solving capabilities
- Ability to manage project portfolios (approx. $800K+ total value)
- Effective communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy
- Ability to travel locally to project sites around the Columbus area as needed
