Senior Power Engineer- P&C/Physical
Position Summary
A leading engineering and consulting organization focused on mission-critical infrastructure is seeking a Senior Power Engineer - Substations to support the growth of its power delivery practice. This role combines responsibilities across both Substation Physical Design or Protection & Control Engineering for utility, renewable energy, data center, industrial, BESS, microgrid, and grid interconnection projects.
The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in either Physical or P&C engineering with the ability to collaborate across disciplines to deliver complete substation solutions from conceptual design through construction, commissioning, and energization. This is a highly technical, hands-on role requiring independent execution, client interaction, and technical leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Physical Substation Design
- Perform detailed design of AIS and GIS substations, switching stations, and utility interconnection facilities.
- Develop:
- General arrangements
- Equipment layouts
- Plan and elevation drawings
- Bus configurations (Ring Bus, Breaker-and-a-Half, Double Bus)
- Grounding systems and calculations (IEEE 80)
- Lightning protection and shielding studies (IEEE 998)
- Cable routing, conduit, and ductbank systems
- Control house layouts
- AC/DC auxiliary power systems
- Material lists and equipment specifications
- Coordinate with civil, structural, and P&C disciplines to deliver construction-ready design packages.
- Support BESS, microgrid, and inverter-based resource (IBR) interconnection facilities.
Protection & Control Engineering
- Develop protection philosophies and protection system design packages.
- Produce:
- Three-line and elementary diagrams
- AC/DC schematic drawings
- Wiring diagrams and terminal schedules
- Relay panel layouts
- SCADA and communications diagrams
- Develop and review relay settings packages for transmission and distribution applications.
- Perform or support:
- Protection coordination studies
- Short circuit studies
- Arc flash studies
- Harmonic studies
- Power flow studies
- EMT/transient studies
- Design protection systems for substations, generation interconnections, BESS, microgrids, and other inverter-based resources.
- Support relay testing and commissioning activities using OMICRON, Doble, or similar platforms.
Project Execution & Client Engagement
- Serve as a technical contributor on complex power delivery projects.
- Interface directly with utilities, developers, owner's engineers, and industrial clients.
- Participate in design reviews, technical meetings, and client presentations.
- Support construction, commissioning, testing, and energization activities.
- Resolve technical issues encountered during engineering, procurement, and construction phases.
- Support quality assurance and adherence to internal engineering standards.
Required Technical Expertise
Physical Engineering
- Medium- and high-voltage substation design.
- AIS and GIS equipment applications.
- Grounding and shielding design.
- Bus design and structural coordination.
- Cable systems, conduit, and ductbank design.
- Equipment specifications including:
- Power transformers
- Circuit breakers
- Disconnect switches
- Instrument transformers
- Surge arresters
- Bus structures
Protection & Control
- Protective relay applications and settings development.
- Relay platforms such as SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, or equivalent.
- Protection coordination and fault analysis.
- Transmission and distribution protection schemes.
- SCADA and communications systems.
- Substation automation and IEC 61850 concepts.
- Utility-scale interconnection requirements.
Software & Tools
Experience with some or all of the following:
- AutoCAD
- MicroStation
- Revit (preferred)

Education & Experience
Required
- BS in Electrical Engineering.
- PE license or actively pursuing licensure.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in:
- Substation Physical Design, and/or
- Protection & Control Engineering.
- Experience supporting utility, renewable energy, industrial, data center, transmission, distribution, or grid interconnection projects.
- Proven ability to develop construction-quality drawing packages and engineering deliverables.
Highly Preferred
- BESS experience.
- Microgrid design experience.
- Renewable generation interconnections.
- GIS substation experience.
- High-voltage substations (138kV+).
- IEEE 1547 / IEEE 2800 interconnection expertise.
- LGIA / SGIA utility interconnection experience.
- IEC 61850 substation automation experience.
- Relay commissioning and field testing experience.
