My client, a highly respected multidisciplinary design firm in New England, is seeking a Construction Specifications Writer to join its collaborative and design-focused practice. This firm offers a unique environment where architects, engineers, planners, technologists, and industry experts work together to deliver innovative solutions across a diverse range of project types.

Reporting to the Architecture Department leadership team and working closely with senior specifications professionals, this role offers the opportunity to contribute to projects spanning K-12 education, higher education, workplace, federal government, commercial, life sciences, and advanced technology sectors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare architectural specifications for all project phases based on direction from project managers and project architects.
  • Coordinate specifications across internal disciplines and external consultants to ensure consistency in language, format, and technical requirements.
  • Develop and coordinate Uniformat specifications during schematic design phases.
  • Compile and manage project manuals utilizing office master specifications, MasterSpec, and MasterFormat standards.
  • Coordinate bidding, contracting, and front-end documentation for client review.
  • Conduct product and technical research to support project teams and specification development.
  • Review drawings and specifications to ensure coordination between contract documents.
  • Review and coordinate consultant and engineering specifications with project manuals.
  • Prepare addenda and assist with RFIs, submittal reviews, substitution requests, and specification interpretation during construction.
  • Support the ongoing maintenance and development of the firm's master specification library.
  • Assist in educating project teams on specification best practices and coordination.
  • Research emerging products, specification technologies, manufacturers' resources, and specification-writing tools.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in architecture, engineering, construction, specifications consulting, product representation, or a related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of MasterSpec and MasterFormat systems.
  • Working knowledge of AIA contracts, forms, and contract documents.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and organizational communication skills.
  • Strong proficiency in document production, technical writing, and research.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CSI certification such as CDT, CCS, CCCA, CCPR, or active involvement with the Construction Specifications Institute.
  • Licensed Architect or Professional Engineer.
  • Experience with LEED, sustainability frameworks, or green building standards.
  • Familiarity with Revit or other BIM software.
  • Experience with SpecsIntact or other specification management software.
