Power Systems Engineer, Arc Flash Studies
Position Summary:
A dynamic engineering team is seeking a technically proficient and safety-focused Arc Flash Engineer with a strong background in Power Systems Studies. This hybrid role, based in Reno, Nevada, offers the opportunity to contribute to high-impact electrical safety and reliability projects across a range of sectors, including utilities, industrial facilities, and commercial operations.
The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience in arc flash hazard analysis, short circuit studies, and protective device coordination, along with a deep understanding of electrical safety standards and modeling software. This position is well-suited for someone who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges and collaborating across disciplines to deliver practical, data-driven solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct detailed arc flash hazard analyses in accordance with NFPA 70E, IEEE 1584, and OSHA regulations.
- Perform short circuit, load flow, and protective device coordination studies for low and medium voltage systems.
- Develop and maintain accurate electrical system models using tools such as ETAP, SKM PowerTools, EasyPower, or equivalent.
- Analyze study results and recommend mitigation strategies to reduce incident energy levels and enhance system protection.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports, one-line diagrams, and arc flash labeling packages with clear safety recommendations.
- Collaborate with clients, field engineers, and project managers to gather system data, validate inputs, and ensure successful project delivery.
- Support the creation and implementation of electrical safety programs, including PPE guidance and training materials.
- Stay informed on evolving industry standards, technologies, and best practices in electrical safety and power systems engineering.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
- 3-5 years of experience in power systems analysis and arc flash engineering.
- Proficiency in power system modeling software (ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of electrical safety standards including NFPA 70E, IEEE 1584, and OSHA.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and work independently in a hybrid environment.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or eligibility to obtain licensure is preferred.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with utility interconnection studies, industrial power systems, or mission-critical infrastructure.
- Familiarity with protective relay settings and coordination schemes.
- Knowledge of grounding, bonding, and system reliability assessments.
- Experience conducting site visits and field data collection.
