Electrical Design Engineer - Renewable Energy
Position Overview
Key Responsibilities
- Develop electrical designs for solar photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage systems from concept through construction.
- Utilize industry software such as PVSyst, Helioscope, and manufacturer design platforms to perform production modeling and system analysis.
- Conduct site assessments to evaluate existing electrical infrastructure and verify field conditions.
- Prepare permit, construction, and interconnection drawing packages for utility and authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) approvals.
- Create single-line diagrams, equipment schedules, installation details, and engineering calculations.
- Produce construction and shop drawings to support installation and commissioning teams.
- Capture existing site conditions using drone-based or terrestrial scanning technologies when required.
- Develop AutoCAD layouts based on site conditions, applicable codes, and project specifications.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, contractors, and field personnel throughout the project lifecycle.
- Review field markups and update as-built documentation and record drawings.
- Support project closeout activities and maintain accurate engineering records.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical discipline, or equivalent experience in electrical construction and design.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience designing renewable energy or electrical power systems.
- Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles and power system analysis.
- Ability to perform engineering studies and calculations, including:
- Voltage drop analysis
- Conductor ampacity calculations
- Power factor evaluation
- Arc flash and fault current analysis
- Protection coordination studies
- Protective relay applications
- Equipment sizing and selection
- Experience interpreting and applying electrical and building codes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- NABCEP certification or related renewable energy credentials.
- Experience with solar PV and battery energy storage system (BESS) design.
- Knowledge of electrical construction practices and project execution.
- Proficiency with:
- AutoCAD 2D and 3D
- Revit
- Bluebeam
- Renewable energy modeling software
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Familiarity with utility interconnection processes and permitting requirements.
