About the Opportunity

Our client is a nationally recognized engineering, construction, and technical services firm supporting electric utilities, power generation, renewable energy, and industrial markets across the United States. With decades of experience delivering complex power infrastructure projects, the company provides a full range of services including engineering and design, program management, testing and commissioning, construction management, and EPC project delivery.

They are seeking a Supervising Substation Engineer to lead engineering teams responsible for high-voltage substation projects throughout the project lifecycle.

Position Summary

The Supervising Substation Engineer is responsible for overseeing engineering team performance, resource planning, project execution, and overall delivery success. This leadership role carries responsibility for maintaining project quality, schedule, and budget objectives while ensuring engineering teams are effectively staffed and supported.

The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in substation engineering and design, proven leadership experience, and the ability to successfully manage multiple concurrent projects and multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering teams to achieve project quality, schedule, and budget objectives.
  • Oversee the execution of multiple substation projects simultaneously.
  • Assign resources and coordinate staffing based on project requirements, schedules, and team availability.
  • Collaborate closely with project engineers, construction teams, procurement personnel, and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure design teams are following project-specific standards and established engineering best practices.
  • Communicate project status, risks, and deliverables with clients, management, and internal teams.
  • Develop and monitor project schedules and budgets to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Utilize engineering software for tasks such as:
    • Ground grid design
    • Relay coordination studies
    • Transformer sizing
    • Short-circuit analysis
    • Load flow studies
  • Perform engineering and design work as needed to support project schedules and client deliverables.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable industry standards, including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI.
  • Promote accountability, ownership, and safety throughout engineering teams.
  • Support occasional travel for project meetings, site visits, and client engagements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in electric utility, power delivery, or related power infrastructure engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience in both substation engineering and substation design.
  • Strong leadership experience managing engineering teams and multiple concurrent projects.
  • Ability to obtain additional state PE registrations when required.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams consisting of engineers, designers, and drafters.
  • Extensive knowledge of high-voltage substations, particularly systems 138kV and above.
  • Strong understanding of AC/DC fundamentals and three-phase power systems.
  • Proficiency with common engineering analysis and design software.
  • Thorough knowledge of industry standards including:
    • NEC
    • NESC
    • NEMA
    • IEEE
    • ANSI
  • Experience managing project schedules, budgets, staffing, and client relationships.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to lead teams and drive successful project outcomes.

Work Environment & Travel

  • Primarily office-based with occasional site visits.
  • Extended computer work is required.
  • Approximately 10% travel, including occasional overnight travel.
  • Periodic extended hours may be required to support project demands.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
