A well‑established heavy civil contractor with a strong presence across the Southeast is seeking a Heavy Civil Estimator to join its growing team in Birmingham, AL. This role is well suited for an estimator with hands-on experience preparing bids for complex civil infrastructure projects and looking to take the next step in a stable, long-term environment.
Position Overview
The Heavy Civil Estimator will support preconstruction and bidding efforts across a diverse portfolio of infrastructure work. This individual will work closely with project managers, operations leadership, and subcontractors to develop accurate, competitive estimates from conceptual through final bid stages.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for heavy civil projects
- Analyze plans, specifications, soil reports, and bid documents
- Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier pricing
- Assist with bid strategy, value engineering, and risk assessment
- Develop conceptual and detailed estimates for earthwork, utilities, drainage, concrete, and roadway scopes
- Maintain estimating databases, cost histories, and pricing assumptions
- Support pre-bid meetings and internal estimate reviews

- Roadway and highway construction
- Site development and mass earthwork

- Structural concrete and civil infrastructure improvements
Qualifications
- 3-5 years of estimating experience in heavy civil construction
- Working knowledge of civil means and methods
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications
- Experience with estimating software (HCSS HeavyBid, Bid2Win, Agtek, or similar preferred)
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred, but not required
