Vessel Manager
Overview
The Vessel Manager is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and cost‑effective technical operation of a group of vessels. This role oversees maintenance planning, regulatory compliance, budget performance, and coordination with onboard and shore‑based teams. Regular travel is required for vessel inspections and operational reviews.
Key Responsibilities
Operational & Safety Oversight
- Ensure all assigned vessels operate safely and efficiently in alignment with internal management systems and applicable regulations.
- Oversee adherence to safety, environmental, and occupational health standards.
- Identify deviations from procedures and escalate when necessary.
Technical & Maintenance Management
- Monitor and improve the planned maintenance system to ensure optimal performance and reduce operational downtime.
- Address machinery or equipment issues proactively, arranging repairs and preventive measures as needed.
- Conduct vessel inspections and ensure timely completion of inspection and dry‑dock reports.
Budgeting & Cost Control
- Monitor and manage vessel operating budgets, ensuring expenditures remain within approved limits.
- Prepare annual budgets and clarify variances when required.
- Oversee procurement of essential technical parts, equipment, and supplies.
Dry Docking & Project Execution
- Prepare technical specifications for dry docking and manage the full docking cycle from planning to completion.
- Maintain updated dry‑dock project lists and ensure all work meets internal standards and operational needs.
Crew & Stakeholder Interaction
- Work with vessel leadership teams to evaluate performance related to safety, technical skills, and service quality.
- Collaborate with internal departments (operations, crewing, safety, procurement, finance) to support seamless vessel operations.
- Liaise with external parties including classification societies, vendors, and surveyors.
Regulatory & Certification Compliance
- Track regulatory updates (e.g., SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, flag requirements) and plan implementation across assigned vessels.
- Ensure all certificates remain valid and vessels consistently meet compliance standards.
- Support audits, inspections, and follow‑up corrective actions.
Insurance & Technical Claims
- Coordinate with surveyors when dealing with potential insurance claims and ensure proper documentation is submitted.
- Support claim processes with timely technical information.
Additional Responsibilities
- Lead or support internal operational improvement initiatives.
- Serve as backup for other Vessel Managers when needed.
- Carry out additional assignments as directed by senior management.
Requirements
Education
- Chief Engineer (Motor) Certificate of Competency; or
- Degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or Naval Architecture.
Experience
- Minimum 1 year of experience as a Chief Engineer, or as a Technical Superintendent/Vessel Manager overseeing the technical operation of gas carriers. (Required)
Language
- Good command of written and spoken English.
