The organization is seeking an experienced transmission planning professional to join a high-performing team supporting strategic transmission development initiatives across multiple power markets.
Position Summary
The Director, Transmission Planning will lead transmission system analyses and planning activities supporting the identification, evaluation, and development of large-scale transmission infrastructure opportunities. The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing system needs, identifying viable transmission solutions, leading technical studies, and engaging with industry stakeholders throughout regional planning processes.
This role will focus on transmission planning, project evaluation, interconnection support, and strategic grid development initiatives while collaborating closely with engineering, development, commercial, and regulatory teams.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the execution of transmission planning and operational studies, including:
- Power flow analysis
- Reliability assessments
- Economic transmission evaluations
- Voltage performance studies
- Transfer capability assessments
- Transmission expansion analyses
Review and interpret technical studies including:
- Transient stability
- Short-circuit analysis
- Harmonic assessments
- Electromagnetic transient studies
Utilize advanced transmission planning tools to identify system constraints, congestion drivers, reliability needs, and opportunities for new transmission infrastructure.
Develop technical solutions that address system needs while optimizing project economics and overall effectiveness.
Coordinate with internal subject matter experts and external consultants to evaluate transmission development opportunities.
Improve analytical workflows, planning methodologies, and modeling processes to support efficient study execution and decision-making.
Actively participate in regional transmission planning processes and stakeholder activities.
Build and maintain relationships across industry organizations, transmission operators, utilities, developers, and engineering partners.
Manage external consulting engagements and technical service agreements supporting planning and development activities.
Collaborate across engineering, project development, commercial, regulatory, and business functions.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline required.
- Electrical Engineering degree with a power systems concentration preferred.
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field is highly desirable.
Experience
Minimum of 5 years of experience in one or more of the following:
- Transmission planning
- Power systems engineering
- Utility planning organizations
- Independent system operators (ISOs) or regional transmission organizations (RTOs)
- Power systems consulting
Demonstrated experience performing transmission planning studies and evaluating transmission infrastructure projects.
Experience supporting:
- Generator interconnection studies
- Transmission expansion planning
- System reliability assessments
- Economic transmission evaluations
- Production cost modeling
Familiarity with regional transmission planning processes and stakeholder engagement activities.
Experience with transmission development projects and regulated utility planning practices is highly valued.

Strong preference for candidates with hands-on experience utilizing production cost modeling and transmission planning software in real-world planning environments.

- Strong understanding of transmission system planning methodologies and power system operations.
- Knowledge of NERC reliability standards and transmission planning requirements.
- Familiarity with federal and regional transmission planning frameworks.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong project management and organizational capabilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated success working with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to present technical findings to both technical and executive audiences.
