FULLY REMOTE Traffic Technical Lead
We are seeking a Traffic Engineer to serve as a technical lead for a variety of transportation and traffic engineering projects throughout Michigan. This is a fully remote opportunity for a Michigan-based professional who has a strong understanding of MDOT standards, processes, and project delivery requirements.
In this role, you will lead technical traffic engineering tasks, support project delivery teams, mentor junior staff, and serve as a subject matter expert across planning, design, operations, and safety projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the technical execution of traffic engineering projects for MDOT and local agency clients.
- Prepare and review traffic studies, including traffic impact studies, operational analyses, and corridor evaluations.
- Develop traffic signal designs, signal timing plans, maintenance of traffic plans, signing and pavement marking plans, and traffic control concepts.
- Perform analyses using tools such as Synchro, SimTraffic, HCS, VISSIM, and related traffic engineering software.
- Provide quality control reviews and ensure compliance with MDOT standards, guidelines, and design requirements.
- Collaborate with roadway, bridge, drainage, and planning teams throughout project development.
- Support project managers with scope development, scheduling, and technical coordination.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the growth of the traffic engineering practice.
- Participate in client meetings and maintain strong relationships with MDOT and municipal stakeholders.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- 7-15 years of traffic engineering experience.
- Demonstrated experience delivering MDOT transportation projects.
- Strong knowledge of:
- MDOT design standards and project development processes
- MUTCD
- Traffic operations and safety analysis
- Signal design and traffic control systems
- Signing, pavement marking, and maintenance of traffic design
- Experience preparing technical reports, design documents, and construction plans.
- Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment while collaborating effectively with project teams.
Preferred
- Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification.
- Experience serving as a technical lead or task lead on transportation projects.
- Experience with micro-simulation and operational analysis software.
- Familiarity with local agency and municipal transportation projects throughout Michigan.
