Land Development Design Engineer

Role Overview

The Design Engineer will support civil/site design for new residential and multifamily development projects across active markets. This person will work closely with senior engineers, project managers, construction teams, and development personnel to help prepare civil construction documents and support projects from early design through permitting and construction.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone with a civil engineering degree, EI/EIT certification, and around 1-2 years of experience who wants to develop quickly in a hands-on, fast-paced environment. Prior real estate, multifamily, or land development experience is helpful but not required. The most important qualities are a strong civil engineering foundation, willingness to learn, attention to detail, and genuine interest in being trained and coached.

The company is not looking for someone overly senior for this position. This role is specifically aimed at early-career engineers who are still developing their technical skillset and are motivated to progress toward PE licensure.

Some flexibility around hybrid or remote working may be possible depending on location, team structure, and project needs, but this is not guaranteed. Candidates should be able to work with one of the main office locations and collaborate closely with internal teams.

Role Responsibilities

• Support the preparation of civil/site development plans for residential and multifamily projects.
• Assist with design work related to grading, drainage, stormwater management, utilities, erosion control, roadways, access, and site layout.
• Work under the guidance of senior engineers and project managers to develop complete construction document packages.
• Use Civil 3D and other design tools to support site plans, profiles, surfaces, utility layouts, and construction details.
• Assist with technical calculations, reports, permit documentation, and jurisdictional submittals.
• Coordinate with internal development, construction, and site development teams to support project delivery.
• Review comments from municipalities, agencies, and internal stakeholders and help revise plans accordingly.
• Support permitting efforts by helping prepare drawings, exhibits, responses, and supporting documentation.
• Assist with construction-phase support, including plan clarifications, field coordination, design revisions, and as-built review.
• Learn how civil design decisions impact construction cost, schedule, site logistics, and long-term project performance.
• Maintain organized design files, project documentation, and drawing sets.
• Participate in internal design reviews, team meetings, and project coordination discussions.
• Continue developing technical knowledge with the goal of progressing toward PE licensure.
• Take feedback well, ask good questions, and show a strong willingness to learn from senior team members.

Education & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required.
• 1-2 years of civil engineering experience preferred.
• Engineer Intern / Engineer-in-Training certification required.
• Must be actively progressing toward Professional Engineer licensure.
• Strong interest in civil site design, land development, infrastructure, or residential/multifamily development.
• Civil 3D experience is strongly preferred.
• Exposure to grading, drainage, stormwater, utilities, erosion control, or site development design is beneficial.
• Prior internship or full-time experience with a civil engineering consulting firm, design firm, developer, contractor, or public infrastructure team would be relevant.
• Real estate development or multifamily experience is not required.
• Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn technical design standards.
• Ability to take direction, receive feedback, and improve quickly.
• Good communication skills and a collaborative attitude.
• Organized, reliable, and able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-moving environment.
