SCADA Engineer - Utility Automation & Protection Systems

Location: Remote (U.S.)

Position Overview

We are seeking a SCADA Engineer to support the design, configuration, and implementation of utility communication and automation systems. This role will focus on RTUs, SCADA platforms, relay integration, communications networks, and substation automation projects.

The ideal candidate has experience with automation systems, utility communications, relay settings, and SCADA integration and enjoys working across both design and implementation activities.


Key Responsibilities

  • Design and support SCADA and automation systems for utility and industrial applications.
  • Configure and integrate RTUs, communication processors, and substation automation devices.
  • Develop and review relay communication schemes, network architectures, and automation designs.
  • Support relay settings, commissioning activities, and system testing efforts.
  • Configure and troubleshoot communication protocols between relays, RTUs, and SCADA systems.
  • Develop technical documentation including one-line diagrams, communication drawings, SCADA point lists, and system specifications.
  • Assist with commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, and field support activities.
  • Collaborate with clients, project managers, and engineering teams throughout project execution.
  • Participate in design reviews and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

Required

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Automation, or a related technical field.
  • 0-8 years of experience supporting SCADA, automation, controls, or utility systems.
  • Experience with RTUs, SCADA systems, and industrial communications.
  • Familiarity with protective relays and relay integration concepts.
  • Understanding of serial and Ethernet-based communication protocols.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.

Preferred

  • Experience with SEL relays and relay configuration.
  • Experience with SEL RTAC platforms.
  • Familiarity with OrionLX or Eaton automation and communications products.
  • Exposure to utility, power delivery, substations, transmission, or distribution systems.
  • Experience supporting commissioning, startup, or field testing activities.
  • Knowledge of DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850, or related utility communication protocols.

Compensation

Salary Range: $100,000 - $150,000+, depending on experience, technical expertise, and overall qualifications.
