Building Automation Controls Engineer

Job Summary

The Controls Engineer will implement advanced Smart Building control solutions for both existing and prospective clients. This role is essential in delivering projects and programs that generate significant Return on Investment (ROI) for customers. The engineer will serve as a key technical resource, partnering closely with field teams, clients, and internal departments to ensure successful deployment of solutions. Responsibilities include integrating diverse building control systems, applying strong HVAC, lighting, and building automation expertise to develop scalable control strategies for national accounts, and becoming proficient with the organization's established tools and processes.


Essential Job Functions

  • Collaborate with Smart Building Controls (SBC) leadership and engineering teams to design and develop project-specific control systems
  • Prepare installation and commissioning documentation for SBC projects and programs
  • Create point lists, sequences of operation, and other related technical documents
  • Program local control stations to meet defined sequences of operation
  • Develop and configure user interfaces for Building Management Systems (BMS)
  • Perform system integrations using a wide range of protocols and basic software tools
  • Ensure all technologies meet applicable technical standards and integration requirements
  • Report progress and findings to the Controls Manager and engineering teams
  • Work closely and collaboratively with other controls personnel
  • Maintain high performance standards aligned with organizational goals
  • Stay informed on Smart Building industry trends and help position the organization to leverage emerging opportunities
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong technical understanding of A/C electrical circuits and low-voltage D/C circuits
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer datasheets
  • Experience creating technical shop drawings, including riser diagrams
  • Excellent communication, organization, and leadership abilities
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
  • Knowledge of industry best practices in building systems and controls
  • Deep understanding of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, lighting, and hardware systems
  • Proficiency in programming Niagara-based systems (including Niagara N4)

Additional Skills and Abilities

  • Hands‑on experience with hardware and software troubleshooting
  • Experience integrating multiple software or control platforms
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to tackle complex technical challenges
  • Curiosity and a self‑motivated approach to learning

Preferred Experience / Qualifications

  • Experience with Niagara software and programming languages such as JavaScript or HTML
  • Knowledge of LED lighting systems, HVAC operation, and BMS functionality
  • 5+ years as a systems engineer or systems integrator with experience in at least one controls platform
  • 5+ years of experience in the building automation systems industry
  • 5+ years in HVAC automation, controls engineering, or data analytics
  • Expertise with IoT technologies, building automation systems, and database programming

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Work is primarily performed in a professional office environment
  • Occasional lifting of office materials up to 20 pounds
  • Ability to climb stairs or ladders when required
  • Comfortable working in both office and customer site environments
  • Travel up to 25% as needed
