About the Role

The Systems Engineer III - Design supports the planning, development, and execution of design deliverables for building automation systems (BAS), electrical power monitoring systems (EPMS), and related control system integration projects. These projects may span commercial, industrial, and mission-critical environments.

This role collaborates with multidisciplinary teams-including mechanical, electrical, IT, and construction stakeholders-to ensure high-quality, coordinated designs that meet project requirements. The position involves both independent contributions and team support, with opportunities to lead smaller-scope projects while continuing to develop technical expertise.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Design & Documentation

  • Assist in the design of building automation and power monitoring systems using DDC and PLC-based controls.
  • Support development of system architectures, including control networks and IT/OT integration requirements.
  • Assist in selection of field devices such as sensors, actuators, valves, and instrumentation.
  • Support preparation and review of specifications, sequences of operation, and system narratives.
  • Develop and review system diagrams, control schematics, and points/alarm lists.
  • Produce design drawings and visual documentation using tools such as AutoCAD or Revit.
  • Coordinate with IT stakeholders to ensure secure and reliable system design aligned with best practices.

Construction Support & Project Delivery

  • Participate in construction administration activities both remotely and onsite as required.
  • Support design reviews, coordination meetings, and drawing reviews.
  • Review and respond to requests for information (RFIs).
  • Review submittals, shop drawings, and vendor documentation for compliance with design intent.
  • Assist with project closeout activities, including punch lists and final documentation.

Project Coordination & Communication

  • Contribute to project communication, coordination, and reporting.
  • Assist with preparation of progress updates for internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Track assigned tasks and manage time effectively to meet project schedules and budgets.

Digital Tools & Continuous Improvement

  • Utilize digital tools and automation to improve efficiency, accuracy, and consistency of deliverables.
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflows and adopt new technologies.
  • Continuously develop technical knowledge and stay current with emerging tools and industry practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5+ years of experience in building automation, electrical power monitoring, or controls engineering.
  • Working knowledge of BAS, EPMS, or industrial control system design.
  • Familiarity with control systems, including DDC platforms and PLC-based systems.
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals (IP addressing, VLANs, switches, and routers).
  • Experience with industry communication protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus, SNMP).
  • Proficiency in design tools such as AutoCAD or Revit.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with smart building systems or IoT-enabled infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with common BAS platforms and control systems.
  • Exposure to system integration involving both controls and software layers.
  • Experience working in mission-critical, industrial, or large-scale projects.
  • Understanding of cybersecurity principles for control systems.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to work in office, remote, and field environments as required.
  • Ability to access job sites, including navigating stairs, ladders, and confined spaces when necessary.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment within typical field limits.
  • Ability to work in varying environmental conditions and follow site safety requirements.

Travel Requirements

  • Occasional travel may be required to support project coordination, site visits, or commissioning activities.
