Position Overview

The Design Engineer - Building Automation Systems is responsible for developing accurate, constructible, and code-compliant control system designs for commercial building automation projects. This role translates project requirements, sequences of operation, and system architectures into detailed AutoCAD drawings and engineering documentation to support installation, programming, commissioning, and owner acceptance.

The ideal candidate combines strong HVAC and BAS technical knowledge with precision drafting skills and the ability to collaborate across project teams.


Key Responsibilities

System & Controls Design

  • Develop complete BAS system designs from concept through construction documentation.
  • Interpret contract documents, specifications, and sequences of operation.
  • Engineer control system architectures including controllers, networks, power, and device layouts.
  • Select appropriate control devices including sensors, actuators, valves, and dampers.

AutoCAD & Technical Documentation

  • Create and maintain detailedAutoCAD drawings including:
    • Control system schematics
    • Panel layouts and wiring diagrams
    • Network architecture diagrams
    • Floor plan device layouts
  • Produce accurate point lists, I/O summaries, and bill of materials (BOMs).
  • Revise drawings based on field feedback, design changes, and RFIs.
  • Maintain drawing standards and version control.

Project Coordination

  • Coordinate design efforts with Project Managers, Controls Engineers, and Field Technicians.
  • Support construction and installation teams by clarifying design intent and resolving issues.
  • Participate in design review meetings and value-engineering discussions.
  • Support submittal preparation and review processes.

Standards & Quality

  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and customer design guidelines.
  • Apply company CAD standards, naming conventions, and documentation templates.
  • Support continuous improvement of engineering workflows and design tools.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of experience designing Building Automation or HVAC control systems.
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD (2D drafting required; 3D experience a plus).
  • Working knowledge of HVAC systems including AHUs, VAVs, RTUs, boilers, and chillers.
  • Ability to interpret sequences of operation and translate them into constructible designs.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing systems using platforms such as Niagara N4, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Johnson Controls, Distech, or Honeywell.
  • Familiarity with control networking protocols (BACnet MS/TP, BACnet/IP, Modbus).
  • Experience supporting construction-phase engineering and field coordination.
  • Exposure to Revit or BIM coordination (BAS scope).
  • Understanding of commissioning requirements and deliverables.
