Director, Mechanical & Plumbing Engineering - Data Centers
Location: Remote | California or Colorado Preferred
Compensation: $190,000 - $230,000 Base + Bonus + Comprehensive Benefits
A leading developer, owner, and operator of large-scale energy and digital infrastructure is seeking a Director of Mechanical & Plumbing Engineering to provide technical leadership across a rapidly expanding portfolio of hyperscale and mission-critical data center projects. This individual will play a key role in shaping engineering standards, driving innovation, and ensuring scalable, reliable, and cost-effective mechanical system designs across multiple projects nationwide.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of mechanical and plumbing engineering standards, specifications, and design guidelines.
- Provide technical oversight for cooling, piping, water distribution, drainage, and supporting infrastructure systems within mission-critical environments.
- Drive standardization and innovation initiatives by evaluating emerging technologies, materials, equipment, and vendor solutions.
- Review and approve equipment submittals, technical documentation, and design deliverables to ensure alignment with company standards.
- Support value engineering efforts focused on constructability, reliability, operational performance, and cost optimization.
- Develop standardized sequences of operation and commissioning requirements in collaboration with controls and automation teams.
- Partner with design, construction, procurement, and operations teams to incorporate lessons learned and continuously improve future project delivery.
- Collaborate with operations stakeholders to ensure long-term maintainability, reliability, and lifecycle performance of mechanical systems.
- Support sustainability initiatives through energy-efficient and resource-conscious mechanical system design.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of engineers while fostering technical excellence and professional growth.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field; PE license preferred.
- 8-12+ years of experience designing and delivering mechanical systems for data centers, mission-critical facilities, or large-scale industrial/commercial projects.
- Strong expertise in cooling systems, piping infrastructure, water distribution, plumbing systems, and critical facility design.
- Experience establishing engineering standards, design guidelines, and best practices across multiple projects.
- Proven ability to lead technical teams and mentor engineers in a collaborative environment.
- Knowledge of applicable building codes, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Proficiency with engineering design tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM platforms.
- Experience coordinating with consultants, contractors, procurement teams, and operational stakeholders.
- Strong communication, leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
