Director of Business Development
I'm working with a client who is seeking a Director of Business Development to join their growing team.
This is a senior-level, highly visible leadership role within a well-established, employee-owned firm in the AEC / professional services space. The position blends strategic leadership with hands-on execution, and will play a critical role in shaping and driving firmwide growth initiatives. The Director of Business Development will oversee the proposal function, manage business development activities across multiple business units, and partner closely with executive leadership to align marketing and sales efforts with broader organizational goals.
This individual will be responsible for organizing, planning, and managing the firm's overall sales efforts, including setting and tracking business development objectives that align with company-wide growth targets. They will oversee CRM systems to ensure accurate tracking of client relationships and BD activities, while also collaborating closely with technical teams to support proposals, develop scopes of work, and contribute to fee strategies.
A key focus of the role will be building and refining a structured business development model, including seller-doer programs, and leading firmwide training initiatives to elevate BD and marketing capabilities across the organization. The Director will also play a central role in guiding pursuit strategy-helping evaluate opportunities, driving go/no-go decisions, and ensuring that pursuit teams are positioned with clear differentiators and winning strategies.
In addition, this role requires developing and maintaining strong, long-term client relationships, representing the firm externally with clients, partners, and industry organizations, and maintaining visibility in relevant professional and community groups. The Director will continuously evaluate market trends, emerging regions, and target sectors to identify and prioritize new growth opportunities.
From a leadership standpoint, this role will oversee a proposal team, managing workload, deadlines, and quality standards to ensure consistent, high-level deliverables. The ideal candidate is someone who can mentor and develop staff, manage cross-functional stakeholders, and balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
The client is looking for a candidate with 10+ years of progressive business development experience, including team leadership, ideally within the AEC or related professional services industry. A proven track record of winning high-value work, building strong client networks, and leading successful pursuit strategies is essential. Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills are critical, along with the ability to operate both strategically and tactically.
The position is hybrid and based in a major Rocky Mountain region metro, and offers a competitive compensation package in the $130K-$160K range, along with a comprehensive benefits program and employee ownership structure.
