Director of Roadway Design
Our client, a nationally recognized Top 50 ENR engineering firm, is seeking a Director of Roadway Design to lead major transportation projects in Tennessee and the surrounding Southeast region. This is an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned highway engineer with 15+ years of experience who is ready to manage complex projects, mentor teams, and make a lasting impact on regional infrastructure across numerous DOTs.
The Director of Roadway Design will be responsible for:
- Leading multidisciplinary project teams, including engineers, designers, and subconsultants
- Managing project budgets, schedules, deliverables, and client relationships
- Coordinating with DOTs, municipalities, and private clients across the Southeast
- Supporting business development through proposals, interviews, and client presentations
- Mentoring and developing junior engineers and emerging project managers
- Collaborating with other discipline leads to ensure integrated project delivery
- Representing the firm at client meetings, public forums, and industry events
- Advising Department Managers, Practice Leaders, and C-Suite on strategic direction and growth
The ideal candidate will have:
- At least 15 years of highway/transportation engineering experience
- Strong knowledge of TDOT standards and procedures
- Experience managing large-scale DOT projects across multiple states
- Proficiency in MicroStation, GEOPAK, or OpenRoads (primarily for training/mentorship)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Tennessee (or ability to obtain quickly)
- Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills
- A collaborative mindset and passion for mentoring and team development
