Remote BAS Design Engineer

Job Summary

The Building Automation Design Engineer is responsible for the engineering and design of Building Automation Systems (BAS) for commercial, institutional, industrial, and mission‑critical facilities. This role focuses on translating project requirements, specifications, and sequences of operation into complete, build‑ready control system designs that support efficient installation, commissioning, and long‑term operation.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in HVAC controls design, DDC systems, and BAS architecture, and works closely with sales, project management, field technicians, and clients throughout the project lifecycle.


Key Responsibilities

Controls Design & Engineering

  • Develop BAS designs including system architecture, controller layouts, network topology, and panel designs
  • Create sequences of operation aligned with project specifications and owner requirements
  • Select control hardware including controllers, sensors, actuators, valves, and networking components
  • Produce points lists, I/O schedules, and bill of materials (BOMs)

Drawings & Submittals

  • Prepare detailed controls submittals, including:
    • Control diagrams and schematics
    • Network and system architecture drawings
    • Panel layouts and wiring details
    • Equipment and device schedules
  • Develop drawings using AutoCAD, Visio, Revit, or similar tools
  • Support creation of as‑built drawings and closeout documentation

Project Coordination

  • Review mechanical drawings, specifications, and RFPs to define scope and design intent
  • Coordinate with project managers, programmers, and field technicians to ensure design feasibility
  • Support sales and estimating teams with conceptual designs and technical input
  • Participate in design reviews, kickoff meetings, and sales‑to‑operations handoffs

Technical Support & QA

  • Answer RFIs and provide technical clarification during construction
  • Review field feedback and revise designs as needed
  • Support commissioning teams with design intent clarification
  • Ensure designs comply with company standards, client requirements, and industry best practices

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in Building Automation Systems or HVAC Controls Engineering
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems including AHUs, VAVs, RTUs, chillers, boilers, and plant systems
  • Experience designingBAS using platforms such as:
    • Tridium Niagara (N4)
    • Siemens (Desigo)
    • Johnson Controls (Metasys)
    • Schneider Electric (EBO)
    • Honeywell, Delta, Distech, Automated Logic, or similar
  • Proficiency with controls drawings and submittals
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and controls documentation

Preferred / Nice‑to‑Have

  • Engineering degree (Mechanical, Electrical, or related discipline)
  • Prior field, commissioning, or programming experience
  • Data center, healthcare, higher education, or mission‑critical project exposure
  • Familiarity with open protocols (BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks)
  • Understanding of IT/OT considerations for BAS networks
