Shift Safety Representative (Tunneling)

Our client is seeking a dedicated and safety-driven Tunneling Shift Safety Representative to support active underground construction operations in the San Jose area. This role is responsible for promoting a strong safety culture and ensuring compliance with all safety standards during tunneling activities, including shift-based field oversight. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience supporting tunneling projects and thrives in a fast-paced, high-risk heavy civil environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site safety oversight during assigned shifts for tunneling operations (e.g., TBM, microtunneling, shaft work)
  • Enforce compliance with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and project-specific safety regulations
  • Conduct daily safety inspections, audits, and job hazard analyses (JHAs)
  • Monitor underground work conditions including ventilation, confined space entry, ground support, and equipment operations
  • Lead and participate in daily toolbox talks and pre-shift safety meetings
  • Identify and proactively address unsafe conditions, behaviors, and practices
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and safety violations; prepare detailed reports and corrective action plans
  • Maintain accurate safety documentation, logs, and compliance records
  • Collaborate with project management, superintendents, and crews to reinforce best safety practices
  • Support emergency response planning and execution, including rescue procedures in underground environments

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience overseeing tunneling projects as a safety professional
  • Strong knowledge of tunneling safety protocols, including confined space, ventilation, excavation support systems, and heavy equipment safety
  • Familiarity with OSHA and Cal/OSHA regulations, particularly those related to underground construction
  • Ability to work shift schedules, including nights, weekends, and extended hours as required by project demands
  • Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to influence safe work practices in the field
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, or a related field
  • Safety certifications such as CHST, OHST, or CSP
  • Experience working on large-scale heavy civil or underground infrastructure projects
  • First Aid/CPR and confined space rescue training
