Substation Engineer

Substation Design Engineer

The Substation Design Engineer plays a critical role in the development and execution of engineering designs for high-voltage substations that support electric power transmission and distribution. This position involves creating comprehensive design packages that include physical layouts, electrical schematics, protection and control diagrams, grounding plans, and equipment specifications. The engineer works closely with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure that all designs meet technical requirements, safety standards, and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities include performing detailed electrical calculations such as short circuit analysis, load flow studies, and grounding system design. The engineer selects and specifies major substation equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, bus systems, and control panels. They also prepare construction drawings, bills of materials, and bid documents, and provide technical support during procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.

The role requires collaboration with civil, structural, and protection engineers to ensure integrated and constructible designs. Familiarity with industry codes and standards such as IEEE, NESC, NEC, and utility-specific guidelines is essential. The engineer must also stay current with emerging technologies and best practices in substation automation, digital relays, and SCADA systems.

Candidates should hold a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, with demonstrated experience in substation design. Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, MicroStation), power system modeling tools (e.g., ETAP, SKM), and project management platforms is highly desirable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are key to success in this role.
