Survey Crew Chief
The Survey Crew Chief leads a field survey team responsible for collecting and verifying data used in the planning, design, and construction of infrastructure and land development projects. This role involves operating advanced surveying instruments, managing field logistics, and ensuring data accuracy and compliance with project specifications and regulatory standards.
You will work on a variety of projects including boundary surveys, topographic mapping, construction staking, ALTA/NSPS land title surveys, and right-of-way acquisition. The position requires strong leadership, technical proficiency, and the ability to work in diverse outdoor environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Field Operations
- Lead and supervise a two- to three-person survey crew in the field.
- Operate and maintain survey equipment such as total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, data collectors, and levels.
- Perform boundary, topographic, construction, and control surveys.
- Interpret engineering plans and legal documents to guide fieldwork.
- Ensure accurate and complete field notes, sketches, and digital data collection.
Project Coordination
- Communicate with project managers, engineers, and clients to understand project scope and requirements.
- Schedule and prioritize daily field tasks to meet deadlines.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols and environmental regulations.
- Assist in training and mentoring junior crew members.
Data Management
- Download, process, and review field data for completeness and accuracy.
- Coordinate with office staff to ensure seamless integration of field data into CAD and GIS systems.
- Identify and resolve discrepancies between field conditions and project plans.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or technical training in surveying or geomatics preferred.
- 3-5 years of progressive experience in land surveying, including at least 1 year in a crew chief role.
- Proficiency with Trimble, Leica, or Topcon survey equipment and software.
- Valid driver's license with clean driving record.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Idaho surveying standards and public land survey system (PLSS).
- Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, or similar software.
- Experience with UAS (drone) surveying or LiDAR scanning is a plus.
- LSIT (Land Surveyor in Training) certification or working toward licensure.
