Design Engineer - Controls & Automation

About the Role

As a Senior Design Engineer, you will lead the design, documentation, and implementation of complex control and automation systems across commercial, industrial, and mission-critical facilities. You will serve as both a technical authority and mentor, ensuring automation solutions are designed with accuracy, scalability, and long-term performance in mind.

This role bridges electrical design, control system architecture, and project leadership-ensuring all systems meet client requirements, applicable standards, and energy performance objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design of control and automation systems, including control schematics, network/riser diagrams, panel layouts, and point-to-point wiring details.
  • Interpret mechanical and electrical plans and specifications to develop complete control system designs aligned with sequences of operation.
  • Develop and review control submittals, bills of materials (BOMs), and device specifications for procurement and fabrication.
  • Apply and ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards (e.g., NEC, NFPA, UL, ASHRAE, and local regulations).
  • Perform QA/QC reviews of design documents, submittals, and as-built drawings to ensure accuracy and quality.
  • Support commissioning and startup activities by working with field and software teams to troubleshoot system and network issues.
  • Develop sequences of operation, control narratives, and logic diagrams for complex systems.
  • Engineer system architectures using industry-standard communication protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus, IP-based networks).
  • Design custom control panels and support panel fabrication reviews, factory acceptance testing (FAT), and site acceptance testing (SAT).
  • Evaluate and implement new control technologies, hardware, and energy optimization strategies.
  • Collaborate with IT and software teams to support system connectivity, cybersecurity, and reliability in networked environments.
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers, supporting development in controls, electrical design, and documentation standards.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to resolve design challenges and maintain project timelines.
  • Contribute to internal engineering standards, design practices, and documentation workflows.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in controls engineering, building automation, MEP design, or industrial automation.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar design tools for producing electrical and control drawings.
  • Experience with industrial/network communication protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks).
  • Understanding of distributed control systems (DDC), PLC-based systems, and field device integration.
  • Knowledge of sequences of operation, system integration, and electrical fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with applicable codes and standards (NEC, NFPA, UL, ASHRAE, etc.).
  • Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with PLC/HMI programming or troubleshooting (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, etc.).
  • Field experience with commissioning, startup, panel fabrication, or system testing (FAT/SAT).
  • Experience leading design efforts or owning project-level deliverables.
  • Familiarity with electrical analysis or modeling tools (e.g., ETAP, SKM).
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) or Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) certification (preferred but not required).
