HVAC Conrtols Sales Engineer
The HVAC Controls Sales Engineer is responsible for driving revenue growth through technically led sales of building automation and HVAC control solutions. This role partners closely with customers, consulting engineers, mechanical contractors, and internal operations teams to develop technically sound, cost-effective BAS solutions that meet project requirements and client objectives.
This position blends technical expertise in HVAC controls with strong commercial acumen-supporting the full pre‑sales lifecycle from site walks and concept development through estimating, proposal creation, and handoff to project execution.
Key Responsibilities
Sales & Business Development
- Develop and manage a pipeline of HVAC controls and BAS opportunities within the assigned territory
- Build trusted relationships with owners, consulting engineers, mechanical contractors, and developers
- Lead technical sales discussions and present BAS solutions aligned with client needs
- Support account growth through upselling, retrofits, expansions, and system upgrades
Pre‑Sales Engineering & Estimating
- Review RFPs, specifications, mechanical drawings, and sequences of operation
- Perform site walks and existing system assessments to define scope and risks
- Develop conceptual control system designs, architectures, and integration strategies
- Prepare accurate cost estimates, proposals, and value-engineered alternatives
- Coordinate pricing with vendors, subcontractors, and internal engineering teams [cv | PDF]
Technical Solution Development
- Select appropriate DDC controllers, sensors, networks, and supervisory platforms
- Support integration strategies for HVAC equipment, plant systems, and third‑party devices
- Ensure solutions align with project specifications, client standards, and operational requirements
- Provide technical clarification during bid reviews and customer negotiations
Sales-to-Operations Handoff
- Participate in sales-to-project turnover meetings to ensure scope clarity
- Support project teams during early execution for scope validation and technical alignment
- Maintain documentation related to estimates, assumptions, and exclusions
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in HVAC controls, building automation, or BAS engineering/sales
- Strong working knowledge of HVAC systems (AHUs, VAVs, chillers, boilers, plant systems)
- Experience withBAS platforms such as:
- Tridium Niagara (N4)
- Schneider Electric (EBO)
- Siemens, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Delta, Distech, ALC, or similar
- Proven ability to read and interpret mechanical and controls drawings
- Experience developing estimates, proposals, and technical sales documentation
Preferred / Nice-to-Have
- Prior field experience (technician, programmer, or commissioning engineer)
- Data center, healthcare, higher education, or mission‑critical project exposure
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, Visio, or Revit for conceptual layouts
- Knowledge of open protocols (BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks)
- OEM or manufacturer sales experience
