About the Role
Our client is seeking a Lead Geotechnical Engineer (PE) to support and oversee the geotechnical program for a major A‑2 Everglades restoration project, a $50M+ federally funded megaproject of regional and environmental significance.
This role is ideal for a technically strong, field‑experienced geotechnical leader who can operate confidently between design and construction, manage complex subsurface challenges, and lead communication with contractors, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.
You will be the primary geotechnical authority for a large, ongoing civil works program involving levees, canals, reservoirs, pump stations, earthwork, and dam‑adjacent features.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Geotechnical Oversight
- Leadgeotechnical engineering activities including:
- Site characterization
- Slope stability analyses
- Settlement evaluations
- Seepage and groundwater modeling
- Foundation and embankment design
- Develop and review geotechnical design recommendations, construction specifications, and technical reports.
- Serve as the primaryresponder for:
- RFIs
- Requests for Variance
- Differing Site Condition (DSC) evaluations
- Provide technical guidance during all construction phases, including oversight of field investigations, instrumentation data review, and material testing interpretation.
- Review submittals, shop drawings, and contractor work plans for geotechnical accuracy and compliance.
Construction Support & Field Engineering
- Support daily geotechnical activities across active civil works including dams, reservoirs, levees, canals, earthwork, and pump stations.
- Oversee testing programs related to embankment fill, soil‑cement armoring, cutoff wall construction, foundation preparation, and dewatering systems.
- Resolve real‑time construction challenges in coordination with field teams and maintain strict adherence to project specifications.
- Direct or review intrusive testing such as:
- SPT sampling
- Shelby tube sampling
- Geotechnical laboratory index and strength testing
Project & Client Coordination
- Collaborate with PMs, senior leadership, and clients to define geotechnical scope, schedules, deliverables, and budgets.
- Represent Client in technical meetings, design reviews, and regulatory engagements with:
- USACE
- SFWMD
- SWFWMD
- State DOTs
- Local jurisdictions
- Communicate complex geotechnical concepts to multidisciplinary teams, construction personnel, and external stakeholders.
Quality Management & Documentation
- Ensure compliance with all relevant geotechnical standards (ASTM, AASHTO, USACE, state & local).
- Review and sign off on:
- Technical memos
- QC summaries
- Dam‑safety‑related documentation
- Engineering deliverables
- Oversee documentation of daily geotechnical activities, instrumentation readings, field observations, and recommended actions.
Mentorship & Team Leadership
- Provide coaching, oversight, and technical development for project engineers and staff engineers.
- Support training on geotechnical field procedures, construction documentation, and design methodologies.
- Serve as a senior leader in shaping the long‑term geotechnical capability for the A‑2 program and broader regional team.
Minimum Qualifications
- 15+ years of geotechnical engineering experience
- Active PE and the ability to obtain a Florida PE quickly
- No sponsorship-must have current work authorization
- Demonstrated experience on large‑scale civil, dam, levee, water resources, or heavy‑infrastructure projects
- Strong analytical, report writing, and design skills
- Proven leadership experience coordinating with contractors, agencies, and multidisciplinary technical teams
