A growing electrical equipment manufacturer is seeking a Low Voltage Mechanical Design Engineer to join their on‑site engineering team in Chicago. This role is ideal for candidates who thrive in hands‑on design environments and want to directly influence the development of custom power distribution products.
About the Role
As a Mechanical Design Engineer focused on low‑voltage systems, you'll support the development of custom switchgear, enclosures, and sheet‑metal assemblies used in power distribution applications. This position requires strong competency in both 2D and 3D mechanical design, with an emphasis on accuracy, manufacturability, and engineering best practices.
You'll collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams and contribute to submittals, prototyping, and production support - including work related to UL508 industrial control cabinets and copper design.
What You'll Do
- Create and revise 2D mechanical drawings for submittals and manufacturing.
- Develop 3D models of sheet‑metal assemblies, enclosures, and system components.
- Design and support UL508 cabinets, ensuring compliance with standards and manufacturing requirements.
- Support copper design, including layouts, clearances, and mechanical integration.
- Support engineering design for low‑voltage switchgear and related power distribution products.
- Work closely with electrical and manufacturing teams to ensure design feasibility and compliance.
- Participate in continuous improvement of product design standards and documentation.
What We're Looking For
- Strong experience with 2D drafting tools (AutoCAD or equivalent).
- Solid background in 3D mechanical modeling, preferably with sheet‑metal design (Inventor, SolidWorks, or similar).
- Hands‑on experience with UL508 cabinet design.
- Experience designing or supporting copper.
- Mechanical engineering experience within electrical equipment, switchgear, industrial enclosures, or related fields.
- Ability to work full‑time on‑site in Chicago.
- Detail‑oriented mindset with a focus on quality, manufacturability, and engineering accuracy.
