SENIOR URBAN PLANNER - MICHIGAN

We have a current opportunity for a SENIOR URBAN PLANNER - MICHIGAN on a permanent basis. The position will be based in Michigan and open to the office locations.

A reputable and employee-focused consulting firm is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Planner to join its growing Planning and GIS team. This role offers the chance to lead impactful community planning initiatives, contribute to technical reports and presentations, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams serving municipal, developer, and private clients.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, a passion for community and economic development, and the ability to manage complex planning projects from concept through completion. Leadership, communication, and collaboration are essential to success in this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the production of planning-related deliverables such as technical reports, letters, and presentations for projects including master plans, neighborhood frameworks, and more.
  • Design and facilitate community engagement strategies and events.
  • Oversee data collection, analysis, and interpretation to support project goals.
  • Manage project budgets and timelines effectively.
  • Develop strategies to support economic development, housing, land use, mobility, and other local planning priorities.
  • Collaborate with municipalities, developers, architects, engineers, and community organizations.
  • Apply applicable state, county, and local codes, ordinances, and regulations in project work.
  • Prepare proposals and cost estimates for new planning projects.
  • Supervise and mentor junior planning staff.
  • Represent the firm at public meetings, conferences, and industry events.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant planning experience
  • Master's degree in urban or regional planning, urban studies, architecture, landscape architecture, geography, engineering, or a related field.
  • Certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) required.
  • Strong knowledge of planning methodology, data collection, and analysis techniques.
  • Familiarity with municipal planning, zoning administration, development review, and permitting processes.
  • Experience with economic development strategies, incentives, and real estate processes preferred.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam Revu.
