SVP of Development
The Opportunity:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Vice President of Development to join the executive leadership team and drive the company's national development strategy. This role will oversee all phases of the community solar and energy storage development lifecycle, manage multi-disciplinary teams, and lead portfolio growth through strategic partnerships and market expansion.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership
- Define and execute development strategies for standalone storage, community solar (solar-only and solar-plus-storage), and behind-the-meter opportunities.
- Lead origination, market entry, and expansion into new geographies and utility territories.
- Establish and manage partnerships with utilities, landowners, policymakers, and community stakeholders.
- Collaborate with the CEO and executive team to set growth targets and corporate priorities; report regularly to the board and investors.
- Identify emerging market opportunities and develop entry plans for site acquisition and project advancement.
- Provide strategic oversight for a team of 15 developers and permitting professionals.
- Drive M&A activities to ensure consistent pipeline growth.
Project Development Oversight
- Oversee the full development lifecycle: site identification, land acquisition, interconnection, permitting, zoning, and community engagement.
- Ensure projects meet utility program requirements, financial targets, and risk standards.
- Partner with EPC, finance, and operations teams for seamless handoff to construction.
- Lead negotiations for major agreements, including site control, PPAs, subscription agreements, and interconnection contracts.
Team & Organizational Development
- Build, mentor, and manage a high-performing development team.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and innovation.
- Develop scalable processes, tools, and systems to manage a growing pipeline.
- Lead investment committee approvals for capital allocation.
External Engagement
- Represent the company with regulators, policymakers, and industry associations.
- Monitor and influence legislative and regulatory developments impacting solar and storage markets.
- Support capital raising efforts by providing strategic insights on pipeline and development risk.
Qualifications:
- 12+ years of leadership experience in renewable energy development, preferably community solar or distributed generation.
- Proven track record of advancing solar projects to NTP or COD.
- Deep understanding of interconnection, permitting, land use, and regulatory processes in North American markets.
- Strong negotiation skills with landowners, utilities, and counterparties.
- Executive-level experience managing cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.
- Familiarity with project finance structures and renewable energy economics.
- Excellent strategic, analytical, and communication skills.
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
