AI-Enabled System Planning Engineer

Role Summary

This position is well‑suited for engineers who have a solid foundation in power system concepts and want to work at the intersection of traditional engineering analysis and modern data‑driven, AI‑supported methods. You will contribute to studies for electric utilities using advanced planning software, automated analytical tools, and emerging AI‑enhanced techniques. As you gain experience, you'll also have opportunities to help shape and improve the analytical platforms used by the team. The specific job title will be determined based on experience and background.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in projects focused on grid reliability, resilience, and long‑term system planning for utility clients
  • Conduct engineering analyses, simulations, and data‑centered assessments using core power system principles
  • Use, refine, and help advance cutting‑edge planning and reliability tools, including those that incorporate AI capabilities
  • Develop Python scripts or workflow automations that streamline study processes and improve efficiency
  • Partner with engineering colleagues, data scientists, and software developers to design and implement technical solutions
  • Build early project management and technical leadership abilities
  • Support a collaborative, forward‑thinking environment that values innovation and continuous improvement

Required Qualifications

  • Academic or industry background in areas such as power systems, reliability engineering, resilience modeling, or system planning
  • Experience with tools used for power system simulations or planning studies
  • Working familiarity with Python and interest in automation, scripting, or software‑assisted workflows
  • Interest in using analytics or AI‑based methods to solve engineering challenges
  • Openness to learning and adopting modern AI‑assisted engineering technologies
  • Master's degree in electrical engineering or a related discipline (doctoral studies are a plus)
  • Ability to work effectively within cross‑functional, collaborative project teams
  • Strong analytical thinking, communication, and problem‑solving skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience applying data analytics, optimization, or machine‑learning approaches within engineering contexts
  • Hands‑on development of Python analytical tools or workflows using libraries such as NumPy, pandas, or SciPy
  • Familiarity with modern AI‑supported development tools (e.g., AI plug‑ins in VS Code or other intelligent coding assistants)
  • Understanding of AI architectures or data systems commonly used in engineering analytics, such as graph‑based databases or retrieval‑augmented methods
  • Knowledge of utility reliability indicators (SAIDI, SAIFI, CAIDI) or broader resilience metrics
  • Advanced academic work, research contributions, or publications related to power systems or analytical methods
  • Involvement in technical organizations such as IEEE, CIGRE, or similar groups
