Position Overview:
The Director of Development - East will lead solar project development efforts across the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic U.S., with a focus on Massachusetts and Maryland. This role is responsible for advancing projects from early-stage origination through permitting, interconnection, and achieving NTP. You'll manage a team of developers and collaborate cross-functionally to ensure projects are de-risked, compliant, and financially viable.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee full-cycle solar development from site origination through NTP
- Lead permitting strategy and execution, including local, state, and federal approvals
- Manage interconnection processes with utilities and ISOs, including applications, studies, and agreements
- Evaluate project risks and mitigation strategies across environmental, regulatory, and community dimensions
- Track development milestones and budgets, ensuring alignment with investment stage-gates
- Lead and mentor a team of developers, fostering accountability and performance
- Collaborate with internal teams (Real Estate, Engineering, Finance, Legal, Construction) to ensure project readiness
- Negotiate and manage third-party contracts for land acquisition, permitting consultants, and community engagement
- Support market strategy and site selection based on policy, grid capacity, and commercial viability
- Maintain accurate reporting and data flow across the development portfolio
- Represent the company in stakeholder meetings, including landowners, municipalities, and regulators
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in business, engineering, environmental science, or related field (Master's or PMP preferred)
- 8+ years of experience in renewable energy development, with a focus on solar
- Proven track record of advancing projects through permitting and interconnection to NTP
- Strong understanding of ISO/RTO processes and utility interconnection requirements
- Experience managing external consultants and internal cross-functional teams
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and organizational skills
- Ability to navigate complex regulatory environments and community dynamics
- Willingness to travel up to 25%
