Engineering Director

As Engineering Director, you will hold end‑to‑end technical responsibility for the engineering scope of large‑scale EPC projects across grid infrastructure, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and utility‑scale PV. The role combines deep electrical engineering expertise with leadership across multi‑disciplinary teams, ensuring designs are buildable, compliant, cost‑effective and delivered safely to programme.

You will act as the technical authority from early engineering through execution, supporting project delivery, procurement, construction and commissioning, while also contributing to bid strategy and technical risk management.


Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Delivery

  • Overall technical responsibility for FEED and detailed engineering forEPC projects involving:
    • Grid connections and substations (150 kV+ / TSO & DSO)
    • Utility‑scale PV plants
    • Battery energy storage systems (BESS)
  • Ensure engineering solutions are optimised for constructability, cost, safety and schedule.
  • Accountable for quality, completeness and on‑time delivery of all engineering packages.

Electrical Engineering Expertise

  • Technical authority for electrical scope including:
    • Primary and secondary substations
    • HV/MV networks, protection and control
    • Grid compliance and interconnection requirements
    • BESS integration, auxiliaries and SCADA
  • Review and approval of key designs such as:
    • Substation layouts and equipment arrangements
    • Earthing and lightning protection systems
    • Busbar calculations and short‑circuit studies
    • Equipment specifications and data sheets

Engineering Management

  • Lead, resource and develop multi‑disciplinary engineering teams (internal and external).
  • Coordinate with civil, structural, protection & control, BESS and PV engineering disciplines.
  • Manage interfaces with suppliers, OEMs, partners and subcontractors.

Procurement & Construction Interface

  • Ownership of technical content forEPC tenders and project execution:
    • Technical specifications for procurement
    • Evaluation of supplier and subcontractor bids
  • Provide strong engineering support to construction, commissioning and H&S teams.
  • Participate in and support:
    • Design reviews and risk workshops
    • FATs, SATs and site inspections
    • Technical handovers and as‑built documentation

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Act as senior technical interface to clients, TSOs/DSOs and certifying bodies.
  • Support business development with technical input, bid strategy and risk assessment.
  • Represent the EPC contractor in technical negotiations and project governance forums.

Your Profile

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or comparable technical qualification.
  • 10+ years' experience in utility‑scale grid and substation projects (150 kV+), ideally within an EPC or contractor environment.
  • Strong background in electrical primary systems, design, specification and grid compliance.
  • Practical understanding of EPC project delivery, procurement and construction risk.
  • Experience across grid, BESS and/or utility‑scale PV projects is highly desirable.
  • Proven leadership experience managing senior engineers and multi‑disciplinary teams.
  • Confident stakeholder manager with the ability to challenge, coach and make decisions.
  • Fluent in English; German required or a strong advantage depending on project geography.
