Highway Engineer
An established, nationally recognized engineering firm is seeking an experienced Highway Engineer to lead and manage transportation projects within its regional highway group. This position offers the opportunity to provide technical leadership, oversee project delivery, and coordinate with clients on complex roadway and multimodal transportation initiatives across the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of highway and transportation projects, including:
- Roadway alignments, geometric design, and roadside safety
- Multi-modal facilities (pedestrian, bicycle, transit)
- Maintenance of traffic and construction staging plans
- Prepare and review construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and technical reports
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and industry standards (AASHTO, FHWA, state DOT)
- Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers
- Serve as a primary point of contact for clients and stakeholders
- Support business development through proposal preparation and client presentations
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required; ability to obtain Maryland PE within 6 months preferred
- 10+ years of relevant experience in highway engineering
- Proficiency with design software such as MicroStation, InRoads, OpenRoads, and AutoCAD preferred
- Strong knowledge of AASHTO, FHWA, and state DOT design guidelines; familiarity with Maryland DOT standards is a plus
- Skilled in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, managing multiple assignments effectively
- Positive attitude and commitment to teamwork
