Role Overview
An experienced Automation Engineer is required to develop and deliver control system solutions within the water and wastewater sector. This role suits a technically strong professional with extensive PLC programming and SCADA/HMI development expertise who is comfortable working on complex, large-scale projects and driving them through to completion.
Core Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and support industrial automation systems, including PLCs, SCADA platforms, and associated communication networks
- Develop, configure, and troubleshootPLC programs across multiple platforms, including:
- Rockwell Automation (Studio 5000 / RSLogix)
- Siemens systems (TIA Portal, Simatic Manager)
- Create and maintain operator interfaces and SCADA visualisation systems using tools such as VTScada, FactoryTalk, Wonderware, Intellution, and similar platforms
- Produce control panel designs and generate detailed technical drawings for fabrication and installation
- Diagnose issues within control systems, interpreting wiring schematics, relay logic, and signal paths
- Configure and maintain industrial communication networks and system integrations
- Support system commissioning activities, including factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and on-site startup
- Work with instrumentation such as flow, level, pressure, and analytical devices
- Coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and external vendors
- Maintain organised tracking of multiple active deliverables and project timelines
- Travel to project sites when required for implementation or support activities
Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years' hands-on experience in industrial automation or control systems engineering
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering discipline (Electrical, Controls, Computer Engineering, or similar)
- Demonstrated experience working within water or wastewater treatment environments is highly advantageous
- Strong background in Siemens PLC environments is essential
- Familiarity with Allen-Bradley systems is beneficial
Technical Skillset
- Proficient in PLC programming, troubleshooting, and system integration
- Strong understanding of SCADA systems, including configuration, deployment, and maintenance
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, OPC, Ethernet/IP, and Profibus
- Experience integrating PLCs with SCADA, historians, and plant-level systems
- Exposure to legacy system upgrades or migrations is an added advantage
- Working knowledge of Windows-based systems, databases, and general IT infrastructure
- Competence in interpreting P&IDs, wiring drawings, and network architecture diagrams
