Overview
Our client is a leading national advisory firm specialising in emissions reduction, climate strategy and low‑carbon transition planning. With a multidisciplinary team spanning engineering, climate science, policy, and carbon markets, they support large industrial organisations in navigating Australia's evolving climate and regulatory landscape.
We are partnering with them exclusively to appoint a Senior Consultant with deep expertise in the Safeguard Mechanism and industrial decarbonisation. The role suits someone who is technically strong, commercially minded, and comfortable advising complex operations across mining, resources, and heavy industry.
This position sits at the cross-section of policy, engineering, and carbon markets-ideal for someone who can translate regulatory requirements into practical, commercially sound pathways for emissions reduction.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise large industrial facilities on Safeguard obligations, including baselines, emissions‑intensity calculations, reporting triggers, and compliance requirements.
- Provide guidance on when facilities must report or surrender Safeguard Mechanism Credits (SMCs) or ACCUs.
- Track and interpret policy updates, providing proactive guidance on regulatory changes.
- Develop site‑specific decarbonisation strategies that align operational needs with long‑term capital planning.
- Assess technical abatement opportunities such as:
- Renewable energy procurement & PPAs
- Electrification of vehicles and heavy fleets
- Process optimisation and efficiency improvements
- Onsite energy generation and storage solutions
- Fuel switching
- Carbon capture and storage (CCS)
- Demand‑side response strategies
- Support modelling of abatement costs, offset strategies, and compliance pathways.
- Advise on ACCU procurement, carbon portfolio optimisation, and offset generation opportunities.
- Work closely with executive leadership, sustainability functions, and operational engineering teams.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in engineering (chemical, mechanical, electrical or related).
- 5+ years working in mining, resources, energy, transport, or broader heavy industry.
- Strong familiarity with the Safeguard Mechanism, Clean Energy Regulator frameworks, and Australia's carbon market.
- Experience evaluating real‑world decarbonisation opportunities and operational constraints.
- Understanding of both short‑ and long‑term energy markets is advantageous.
- Commercially focused mindset with the ability to balance technical feasibility, cost, and carbon risk.
- Strong analytical, modelling, communication, and client‑facing skills.
