Senior Project Engineer (CCR/Landfill Lead)
Overview
A large power generation organization is seeking an experienced engineer to support and lead its Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) landfill program. This role will serve as a technical lead and subject matter expert, playing a key part in the evolution of long-term landfill strategy, compliance, and operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage CCR landfill programs, including capacity planning, design, permitting support, and construction oversight
- Provide technical guidance on landfill operations, regulatory compliance, and environmental performance
- Monitor daily landfill activities including compaction, stormwater controls, erosion/sediment measures, and haul road conditions
- Develop work plans, reports, and engineering recommendations aligned with operational and financial objectives
- Manage multiple engineering projects simultaneously, ensuring safety, schedule, budget, and quality targets are met
- Oversee contractor performance, support contract development and negotiations, and ensure compliance with contract terms
- Serve as a technical representative in meetings with internal stakeholders, regulators, vendors, and contractors
- Mentor junior engineers and provide direction to project teams and external partners
- Maintain accurate technical documentation (drawings, specifications, reports, databases)
- Analyze data and provide actionable engineering recommendations
- Support landfill-related capital projects, including budgeting, scheduling, risk assessment, and execution
- Prepare updates and presentations for senior leadership and key stakeholders
Project Management Responsibilities
- Lead complex capital projects through full lifecycle execution
- Manage project budgets, schedules, and resource allocation
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure project success
- Track performance metrics and ensure alignment with regulatory and safety standards
- Conduct bid processes and oversee contract execution for major projects
- Identify risks and implement mitigation strategies
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Civil strongly preferred) from an accredited program
- 7+ years of relevant engineering experience, preferably in power generation, solid waste, or environmental infrastructure
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred (or ability to obtain)
- Ability to obtain landfill manager certification (state-specific)
Skills & Experience
- Strong knowledge of CCR regulations, landfill operations, or solid waste management
- Experience managing civil, mechanical, or infrastructure projects in an industrial or utility environment
- Proficiency with project scheduling tools and engineering software (e.g., CAD, Primavera, MS Office)
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to present to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Strong leadership, project management, and stakeholder coordination abilities
- Proven ability to manage competing priorities and drive projects to completion
