Overview
A global engineering and design consultancy is seeking a Senior Substation Designer with hands‑on experience supporting high‑voltage (15kV-345kV) utility substation projects, including work related to renewable energy and data center interconnections. This role supports projects from conceptual design through final deliverables and includes technical leadership and mentoring responsibilities.
This position can be based in multiple West Coast or Texas offices, with hybrid / flexible working options available.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop 3D models and 2D drawings forHV substations, including:
- Single-line diagrams
- Physical substation layouts
- Conduit and cable plans
- Grounding grid layouts
- Lightning protection and yard lighting plans
- Bills of materials
- Lead, coach, and mentor junior designers and CAD technicians
- Coordinate with engineers and other disciplines to deliver fully integrated designs
- Incorporate engineering input, redlines, and client feedback into design packages
- Apply client specifications and IEEE / ANSI standards
- Maintain drawing revisions, models, and project documentation in an organized manner
- Follow established design, drafting, and quality standards
Required Qualifications
- Associate Degree in technology or related discipline
- 6+ years of substation design experience
- Proven experience with 15kV-345kV physical utility substations
- Strong knowledge of IEEE / ANSI standards
- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Preferred Experience
- Substation design using BIM-based tools such as:
- Inventor
- SDS‑P4A
- Primtech
- Ability to quickly learn and adopt new design software
