Overview
We are seeking an experienced Substation Project Manager to lead the planning, execution, and delivery of substation projects across transmission and distribution systems. This individual will manage multidisciplinary teams across physical design, protection & control (P&C), and construction, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget.
This role is ideal for someone with a strong technical foundation in substation engineering who has transitioned into project leadership and client-facing responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
Lead end-to-end project management of substation projects (typically 12 kV-500 kV), including greenfield, brownfield, upgrades, and expansions
Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, and forecasts
Coordinate across engineering disciplines, including:
Substation physical design
Protection & control / relay settings
Civil/structural and construction teams
Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, utilities, and internal stakeholders
Oversee engineering deliverables (e.g., general arrangement drawings, one-lines, wiring diagrams) to ensure quality and compliance
Identify project risks and implement mitigation strategies
Manage subcontractors, vendors, and procurement activities
Support construction coordination, commissioning, and project closeout activities
Ensure compliance with utility standards, NESC, NEC, IEEE, and applicable regulatory requirements
Track KPIs and provide regular reporting on project progress, financials, and resource allocation
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (preferred) or related field
5-10+ years of experience in substation project management
Proven experience managing substation or power delivery projects
Strong understanding of:
Substation design (physical and/or P&C)
Utility practices and grid infrastructure
Project lifecycle from engineering through commissioning
Experience managing budgets, schedules, and client relationships
Proficiency with project management tools (e.g., MS Project, Primavera, or similar)
Preferred Qualifications
PE (Professional Engineer) license
PMP certification or equivalent project management credential
Experience with EPC or consulting environments
Familiarity with SCADA, relay protection, and grid modernization initiatives
Background working with utilities, co-ops, or IPPs
