Company Overview:
We are working with a well established regional contractor based in eastern South Dakota, with a strong reputation across site preparation, underground utilities, demolition, excavation, grading, hauling, and asphalt paving. The company recently expanded its asphalt capabilities through the acquisition of a long standing local asphalt paving business, strengthening its ability to deliver work from site prep through final paving.
Position Summary:
Our client is seeking an experienced Asphalt Estimator to support bids across asphalt paving, grading, roadway, parking lot, and site improvement projects. This role will be responsible for preparing accurate estimates, reviewing plans and specifications, completing takeoffs, evaluating project risk, and helping build competitive bid proposals.
This is a strong fit for someone with experience in asphalt estimating, paving operations, grading, roadway construction, or heavy civil estimating who understands how the work is built in the field and can turn that knowledge into accurate pricing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs for asphalt paving, milling, reclamation, grading, aggregate base, and related site work
- Review plans, specifications, contracts, and bid documents to understand full project scope
- Develop accurate cost estimates covering labor, equipment, materials, trucking, subcontractors, and indirect costs
- Build conceptual, budgetary, negotiated, and hard bid estimates
- Evaluate production rates, crew needs, equipment requirements, and material quantities
- Identify scope gaps, constructability concerns, project risks, and pricing opportunities during the bid process
- Solicit, review, and compare subcontractor and supplier pricing
- Use historical project data and production information to improve estimate accuracy
- Work closely with operations and field teams to align estimates with practical project execution
- Maintain organized bid files, pricing records, and estimate documentation
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in asphalt estimating, paving, grading, roadway construction, or heavy civil estimating preferred
- Strong understanding of asphalt paving operations, materials, production methods, and project sequencing
- Experience with parking lots, roadways, airports, commercial paving, municipal work, or site improvement projects is a plus
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, contracts, and technical documents
- Experience with estimating and takeoff tools such as HCSS HeavyBid, B2W Estimate, AGTEK, Bluebeam, or similar platforms preferred
- Strong Excel skills and comfort working with numbers, quantities, and production data
- Detail oriented with strong organizational and time management skills
- Able to manage multiple bids and deadlines at once
- Clear communicator who can work well with estimating, operations, field teams, suppliers, and subcontractors
