A well-established, employee-owned engineering firm is seeking a skilled Automation & Controls Engineer to join its Factory Automation and PLC Services team. Role Overview

You'll be part of a collaborative project execution team, working closely with technical leads to deliver high-quality automation solutions. The role involves designing, configuring, and commissioning PLC-based control systems, SCADA platforms, and IIoT integrations for industrial clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Configure and maintain PLCs for OEM and custom process equipment
  • Develop SCADA systems and integrate with third-party platforms
  • Create functional and detailed design documentation
  • Support FAT/SAT testing and onsite commissioning
  • Provide lifecycle support including system updates and small-scale expansions
  • Travel across VA, NC, and SC (approx. 25%)
  • Collaborate with contractors and plant personnel for installations and testing
  • Migrate legacy PLC systems and update HMI graphics
  • Perform system checks, loop testing, and final commissioning

Qualifications

Required:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (CHE, EE, ME, Comp. Eng, or related)
  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred:

  • Experience with PLC platforms (Emerson, Allen-Bradley, Siemens)
  • Familiarity with HMI/SCADA tools (WonderWare, Ignition, Iconics)
  • Knowledge of OPC and FactoryTalk Gateway integrations
  • Background in regulated manufacturing environments
  • Windows Server and network troubleshooting skills

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform tasks involving standing, walking, sitting, lifting (up to 20 lbs), and using computers and phones
  • Occasional travel and onsite work required
