About the Opportunity
A nationally recognized employee-owned engineering consulting firm is seeking an experienced Senior Plumbing Designer to support the design and delivery of plumbing systems for healthcare, institutional, commercial, and other complex facilities. The firm specializes in high-performance, resilient, and sustainable building solutions and is known for its collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to project delivery.
This fully remote position offers the opportunity to work on challenging projects across multiple regions while collaborating with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients throughout the design and construction process.
Key Responsibilities
Plumbing Design & Engineering
- Design plumbing systems for healthcare, commercial, institutional, and other complex building projects.
- Develop domestic water, sanitary, storm, vent, natural gas, medical gas, and specialty plumbing systems.
- Support fire protection system design and interdisciplinary coordination as needed.
- Perform engineering calculations, equipment selections, and system analyses.
- Prepare construction documents including drawings, specifications, schedules, and technical documentation.
- Coordinate plumbing systems with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and specialty disciplines.
- Review project documentation for code compliance, constructability, quality, and technical accuracy.
- Apply applicable plumbing codes, healthcare standards, and industry best practices throughout project delivery.
Project Delivery
- Collaborate with project managers, architects, engineers, contractors, vendors, and clients during all project phases.
- Participate in project planning, design reviews, and coordination meetings.
- Provide construction administration support, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, conducting site visits, and assisting with issue resolution.
- Support successful project execution while maintaining schedule, quality, and client expectations.
Team Collaboration
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams across multiple office locations.
- Share technical knowledge and contribute to quality assurance initiatives.
- Mentor junior designers and emerging professionals.
- Participate in continuous improvement and technical development efforts.
Location & Travel
- Fully remote position based anywhere in the United States.
- Supports projects and clients across multiple regional markets.
- Approximately 10-20% travel depending on project requirements.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent plumbing design experience.
- 8+ years of plumbing engineering or plumbing design experience within the AEC consulting industry.
- Experience designing plumbing systems for healthcare or other complex facilities.
- Medical gas system design experience strongly preferred.
- Fire protection system design and coordination experience preferred.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Experience preparing construction documents and supporting projects through construction.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of plumbing building systems and interdisciplinary coordination.
- Thorough understanding of plumbing codes, standards, and industry best practices.
- Advanced proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and/or Bluebeam.
- Experience producing engineering calculations, equipment selections, specifications, and construction documentation.
- Understanding of sustainable, resilient, and high-performance building design principles.
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
Preferred Certifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
- Certified Plumbing Designer (CPD) certification preferred.
- Additional industry-related certifications are a plus.
