Position Overview - Operations Engineer

The Resident Operations Engineer serves as the primary on-site representative for utility-scale solar and battery energy storage projects, overseeing O&M activities performed by third-party contractors. This role ensures optimal performance, safety compliance, and long-term reliability of renewable energy assets.


Key Responsibilities of Operations Engineer

Site Oversight & Contractor Management

  • Act as the owner's representative and main point of contact for O&M contractors at a 265 MW solar and 200 MWh BESS site.
  • Supervise daily operations, enforce safety protocols, and ensure adherence to industry best practices.

Portfolio Support

  • Provide operational support across additional renewable energy projects as needed.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure safe working conditions and compliance with federal, state, and internal EHS regulations.
  • Oversee major repairs and modifications to ensure alignment with safety and environmental standards.

Performance Monitoring

  • Analyze production data and KPIs, collaborating with internal teams and contractors to validate performance metrics.
  • Use remote monitoring tools, site inspections, and reports to identify and resolve performance issues.

Engineering & Optimization

  • Assist in defining scopes of work for major repairs and upgrades.
  • Review technical proposals and oversee implementation to ensure alignment with project goals and cost efficiency.

Risk Management

  • Identify operational risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Promote predictive maintenance to reduce downtime and improve equipment reliability.

Reporting & Communication

  • Collect and review maintenance reports, discuss performance metrics with contractors, and participate in technical alignment meetings with headquarters.
  • Provide input on production forecasts based on historical data, weather, and equipment availability.

Industry Best Practices

  • Stay current with innovations in solar and BESS operations.
  • Attend industry events to explore new technologies and methods for performance optimization.

Leadership & Team Building

  • Provide coaching and leadership to contractor personnel, fostering a collaborative and motivated work environment.
  • Uphold company values and ensure professionalism across all site interactions.

Stakeholder Relations

  • Maintain professional relationships with landowners, local authorities, and external stakeholders.
  • Support resolution of claims and disputes in accordance with contracts and local regulations.

Qualifications for Operations Engineer

Required Skills & Experience of Operations Engineer

  • Strong knowledge of EHS regulations and renewable energy standards.
  • Degree or certification in renewable energy, environmental science, or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in utility-scale solar, wind, or battery projects.
  • Familiarity with performance issues in solar and BESS systems.
  • Proven leadership in managing contractors and vendors.
  • Willingness to travel nationally (10-20%) with flexibility for additional travel as needed.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make independent decisions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Office Suite.
  • Experience with SCADA systems and data analysis tools.
  • Understanding of commercial and technical contract terms.
  • Passion for exploring emerging technologies in the renewable energy sector.
