Position Overview
The Design Engineer - Building Automation Systems is responsible for producing highly accurate, constructible BAS designs for mission-critical data center projects. This fully remote role focuses on engineering and documentation using AutoCAD, supporting hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise data center environments.
The ideal candidate has strong BAS design experience, understands data center operational requirements (redundancy, availability, resilience), and can collaborate effectively with project teams in a remote environment.
Key Responsibilities
Data Center Controls Design
- Engineer BAS solutions for data center environments, including white space, mechanical systems, and support infrastructure.
- Translate sequences of operation and basis-of-design documents into complete, build-ready control drawings.
- Design control strategies for critical infrastructure such as:
- Chillers, cooling towers, CRAHs/CRACs, pumps
- Air and water-side economizers
- Plant redundancy (N, N+1, 2N configurations)
- Ensure designs align with uptime, reliability, and operational resiliency standards.
AutoCAD & Technical Documentation
- Develop andmaintainAutoCAD drawings including:
- Control schematics and riser diagrams
- Panel layouts and wiring diagrams
- Network and system architecture diagrams
- Device and sensor layouts
- Create detailed documentation including:
- Point lists and I/O schedules
- Bill of materials (BOMs)
- Control narratives and installation notes
- Revise designs to incorporate RFIs, design changes, and field feedback.
Remote Project Collaboration
- Collaborate remotely with Project Managers, Controls Engineers, and field teams.
- Participate in virtual design reviews, coordination meetings, and value engineering discussions.
- Provide engineering support during construction, startup, and commissioning phases as needed.
- Support integration initiatives with EPMS, DCIM, and other mission-critical systems.
Standards, Quality & Best Practices
- Apply company design standards, CAD standards, and naming conventions.
- Ensure compliance with project specifications, customer standards, and applicable codes.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of BAS design templates and engineering workflows.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, or related field), or equivalent experience.
- 4+ years of experience designing Building Automation Systems.
- Strong proficiency in AutoCAD for controls and system design.
- Experience supporting data center or mission-critical facilities.
- Solid understanding of HVAC systems used in data centers.
- Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with major BAS platforms (Niagara N4, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Johnson Controls, Distech, Honeywell).
- Familiarity with BAS networking protocols (BACnet MS/TP, BACnet/IP, Modbus).
- Experience coordinating with commissioning agents and facilities operations teams.
- Familiarity with data center industry standards and operational best practices.
- Exposure to BIM coordination or Revit environments.

- Salary: $100,000-$140,000 depending on experience (adjustments considered for highly experienced candidates)
