Controls Engineer

Job Title: Controls Systems / Automation Engineer
Job Type: Full-time

A growing automation and electrical control systems integration firm is seeking a talented Controls / Automation Engineer to join its team. This role is ideal for a motivated engineer who thrives in both project design and hands-on implementation. The successful candidate will contribute across the full lifecycle of complex automation projects-from concept through commissioning-serving clients in industries such as pharmaceuticals, plastics, chemicals, and energy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review project specifications, interface with clients, and assist in developing scope of work documentation (knowledge of URS, FDS, DDS in pharma is a plus)
  • Develop detailed engineering deliverables including BOMs, electrical schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and I/O drawings
  • Design and implement PLC, HMI, SCADA, and Historian programs with clear structure and documentation
  • Configure and test industrial communication networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus/TCP, Profibus, Profinet, OPC-UA)
  • Lead FAT and SAT processes, and provide on-site startup/commissioning support (occasional overnight travel required)
  • Maintain project schedules and budgets, manage scope changes, and support cost control and documentation
  • Collaborate with internal fabrication teams, electricians, and contractors to ensure compliance with NEC, UL508A, NFPA 70/79, and customer specifications
  • Prepare and present technical documentation, validation test plans, and SOPs to support regulatory and quality requirements
  • Provide ongoing system support, troubleshooting, and upgrades as needed

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in control systems design and integration
  • Proficiency with major automation platforms, especially Rockwell Automation (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, FactoryTalk View, FactoryTalk Historian), Wonderware (AVEVA), and Inductive Automation Ignition
  • Familiarity with robotic integration, motion control, and instrumentation (pneumatics, VFDs, sensors, servo systems) preferred
  • Ability to read, create, and modify electrical schematics, panel layouts, and P&IDs
  • Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols
  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards (NEC, NFPA 70E, UL508A, NFPA 79, ISA)
  • Experience in regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals, life sciences, chemicals, or plastics is a plus
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. and hold a valid driver's license
