Role Summary

The Engineering Manager will lead a multidisciplinary engineering team with extensive factory automation experience, including control panel design, programming, and installation of complete production lines from concept through startup, as well as equipment upgrades such as drive system replacements and modernizations.

This role requires strong communication skills, a focus on team building and talent development, and effective change management. The Engineering Manager will guide the team in delivering safe, reliable, and cost-effective solutions, on time and aligned with customer expectations.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & People Management

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of engineers, including controls and panel design disciplines
  • Establish clear expectations through regular one-on-one meetings, performance reviews, and individual development plans
  • Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, quality execution, ownership, and customer-focused problem solving

Project & Technical Management

  • Oversee engineering scope for projects from proposal support through design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning
  • Review and approve engineering deliverables, including panel layouts, electrical schematics, I/O lists, network diagrams, and load calculations
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes and standards such as NEC, UL 508A, and customer specifications
  • Support engineer project managers with estimating, change management, and technical risk assessments
  • Assist with troubleshooting complex technical issues during design, construction, factory acceptance testing (FAT), and startup

Process, Quality, and Throughput

  • Standardize engineering processes, templates, and best practices to improve efficiency and consistency
  • Ensure adherence to drawing standards, revision control, and documentation quality
  • Monitor department workload and staffing levels; prioritize work to meet project milestones and customer deadlines
  • Partner with panel shop and installation teams to ensure designs are practical, buildable, and aligned with field execution

Customer & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work directly with customer engineering and operations teams to clarify requirements and resolve technical questions
  • Collaborate closely with Sales on project scope, concepts, and value‑engineering options
  • Coordinate with panel shop and installation leadership to align engineering releases with material procurement and field schedules

Continuous Improvement & Strategy

  • Identify and implement improvements in engineering tools, standards, and workflows
  • Stay current on technologies including PLCs, VFDs, HMIs, and industrial safety systems relevant to served industries
  • Provide input on engineering capacity planning, hiring needs, and long-term technical capabilities
  • Contribute to company strategy, including ownership of annual engineering improvement initiatives and development and maintenance of team KPIs

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Controls/Automation Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • 7+ years of experience in industrial controls, automation, and/or industrial electrical design
  • 3+ years in a leadership, supervisory, or lead engineer role
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Industrial control systems (PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, instrumentation)
    • UL 508A control panel design and fabrication practices
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar tools and at least one major PLC/HMI platform (e.g., Rockwell / Allen‑Bradley)
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a contractor or system integrator environment
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders

Preferred

  • Experience in an industrial electrical contracting or system integrator environment (design‑build or design‑assist)
  • Experience supporting field installation and startup activities
  • Familiarity with EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) or operating within a metrics‑driven organization
