Heavy Civil/Underground Estimator
Our client is a well-established heavy civil construction company based near San Diego, CA, specializing in underground utilities, site development, and paving/grading projects. They are looking for a skilled Estimator to join their team and support their growing pipeline of public and private sector work.
Position Overview
The Heavy Civil / Underground Utility Estimator will be responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates, analyzing project plans and specifications, coordinating with subcontractors and suppliers, and supporting bid proposals for a range of civil construction projects. This role requires strong technical knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare accurate and competitive estimates for:
- Underground utilities (gas, water, sewer, storm drain, etc.)
- Site development projects
- Paving and grading projects
- Review and interpret project plans, drawings, and specifications.
- Perform quantity takeoffs and develop cost breakdowns.
- Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and field operations teams.
- Participate in bid reviews, strategy discussions, and value-engineering efforts.
- Support handoff meetings and assist the project team during project startup.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience estimating in one or more of the following areas:
- Underground utilities
- Site development
- Paving and grading
- Strong understanding of civil construction means, methods, and production rates.
- Experience with estimating software (e.g., B2W, HCSS HeavyBid, Agtek) preferred.
- Candidates with combined experience as both an estimator and a project manager are strongly preferred.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously.
